Sports and Unity Shine at Kiwi-Kannada Community Event
On September 10, 2023, the Kiwi-Kannada community in Auckland celebrated a fantastic two-day sports gala organised by the New Zealand Kannada Koota (NZKK). Held on July 29 and August 26, the event brought together nearly 150 participants across all age groups each day, highlighting exceptional talent, inclusivity, and strong community bonds.
Day 1 took place at Portage Road, New Lynn, featuring 85 badminton matches and 40 intense table tennis matches. Day 2 was held at Fickling Convention Centre, showcasing 72 competitive carrom matches, 36 chess games, and seven family indoor cricket matches using a sponge ball. Known community leaders such as Lingappa Kalburgi, Prakash Raja Rao, Ramchandra Holakkal, and Ravishankar attended to support the community’s endeavours.
The event was more than just sports; it was about fostering community spirit and togetherness. Emerging sports talents within the Indian community enriched the cultural landscape, showcasing diverse skills and contributions to Aotearoa. The inspiration behind this sporting celebration was to instil a winning spirit within the community, ensuring its growth and vitality for generations to come.
The NZKK Executive team did an excellent job organising these well-executed sports days, with full credit going to the hardworking team who made it all possible. The event's success reinforced the importance of community and unity, ensuring a legacy that will continue to connect generations.
